What Is a Lunar Meteorite?

A lunar meteorite is a rock from the Moon that was ejected into space by an impact event and eventually fell to Earth as a meteorite. Unlike mission-returned lunar samples, lunar meteorites arrive naturally and are later recovered in desert environments where their identification and preservation are possible.

Their mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic characteristics closely match those of lunar samples studied from the Apollo and Luna programs, confirming their origin with a high degree of scientific certainty.

Why Lunar Meteorites Matter

Lunar meteorites are of major scientific interest because they provide direct access to lunar material from regions that were never visited by human or robotic missions. They offer valuable insight into the geological evolution of the Moon, including crust formation, impact history, volcanic activity, and regolith development.

Some lunar meteorites come from the ancient highlands and are rich in anorthitic feldspar. Others are mare basalts or impact breccias that record repeated bombardment over billions of years. Each specimen is therefore both a collectible object and a geological archive.

Lunar meteorites are formally classified through detailed laboratory analyses involving mineralogy, chemistry, and isotopic measurements. Once confirmed, they are recorded in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database, ensuring scientific validity and traceability.

Field Discovery and Lunar Expertise

Over the course of my work as a meteorite hunter, I have had the opportunity to discover more than fifteen lunar meteorites corresponding to five distinct lunar finds. These discoveries reflect the importance of field expertise, careful observation, and subsequent scientific confirmation.
