727 g full slice of the Gibeon iron meteorite with Widmanstätten pattern

Full slice of the iron meteorite Gibeon weighing 727 g, displaying a beautifully developed Widmanstätten pattern across nearly the entire surface. This large etched section also contains a remarkable rounded troilite inclusion — an iron sulfide nodule naturally embedded within the metallic structure of the meteorite. The combination of geometric nickel-iron crystallization and the contrasting dark troilite inclusion creates an especially aesthetic and scientifically significant specimen. A substantial and highly displayable Gibeon slice from one of the world’s most iconic iron meteorites.

Gibeon Iron Meteorite Slice – 727 g

This impressive full slice of the famous iron meteorite Gibeon weighs 727 g and presents a beautifully etched metallic structure characteristic of fine octahedrite iron meteorites.

The surface reveals a well-developed Widmanstätten pattern, formed by the intergrowth of kamacite and taenite crystals during extremely slow cooling within the metallic core of an ancient differentiated asteroid.

One of the most remarkable features of this specimen is the presence of a large rounded troilite inclusion, visible near the upper part of the slice. Troilite is a natural iron sulfide commonly associated with iron meteorites and provides strong visual contrast against the etched nickel-iron matrix.

The slice displays an elegant balance between crystalline structure, metallic texture, and natural inclusions, making it both a scientifically interesting and highly aesthetic collector specimen.

Gibeon meteorites are especially prized for the stability and refinement of their etched patterns, and large complete slices such as this example are highly sought after for advanced collections and museum-quality displays.

About the Gibeon Meteorite

The Gibeon meteorite was discovered in Namibia and is classified as a fine octahedrite iron meteorite (IVA). It is among the most famous iron meteorites in the world due to the beauty and stability of its Widmanstätten structures.

Its metallic crystals formed through exceptionally slow cooling inside the core of an early asteroid over millions of years, creating geometric patterns impossible to reproduce artificially.
