The Sahara 97096 Paired Group

This category is dedicated to the Sahara 97096 paired group, which includes Sahara 97072, Sahara 97158, Sahara 97115, Sahara 97093, Sahara 97161, and Sahara 97166. These meteorites belong to the EH3 enstatite chondrite group and represent a particularly important set of primitive enstatite-rich material recovered in the Sahara Desert.

The stones of this paired group were found during one of our meteorite collecting expeditions in the Sahara in 1997. As a group, they are regarded as among the most primitive EH3 meteorites yet identified.

Classification

Sahara 97115 and its paired specimens are classified as EH3 enstatite chondrites, belonging to the high-iron subgroup of enstatite chondrites and representing a highly unequilibrated state. This primitive classification is important because it indicates that the meteorites preserve early textures, mineral chemistry, and nebular components with very limited later thermal modification.

These meteorites have also been described as having undergone only very low degrees of thermal metamorphism, making them especially valuable for the study of early Solar System processes.

Why These Meteorites Are So Important

This paired group is of exceptional scientific interest because it may represent one of the most primitive EH3 chondrites known to date. It preserves early nebular components in an especially clear way, including well-defined, layered, silicate-rich, sulfide-rich, and metal-rich chondrules, together with refractory inclusions and FeO-rich silicates displaying broad compositional ranges.

Such features make this material especially important for understanding the earliest stages of accretion and chemical diversity in the primitive Solar System.

A Highly Primitive EH3 Chondrite

The Sahara 97096 paired group has been compared to other highly primitive EH3 meteorites such as Qingzhen and Parsa. It contains olivine chondrules and fragments of type II chondrules, and has been described as a highly primitive EH3 chondrite that has retained primary accretional nebular features in the form of sulfide-metal-rich chondrules.

This preservation of early nebular features is one of the reasons these meteorites occupy such a special place within the enstatite chondrite group.

Enstatite Chondrites and the Early Solar System

Enstatite chondrites are among the most distinctive meteorites known because they formed under highly reducing conditions unlike those associated with many other chondrite groups. Their mineralogy and chemistry make them essential to the study of the diversity of primitive Solar System environments.

Within that broader context, primitive EH3 meteorites are especially important because they preserve early textures and components that later metamorphism would otherwise have erased. For collectors and researchers alike, such meteorites represent not only rare material, but also exceptionally informative material.
